🏡I shared this post about home for the first time a few years ago and now feels like the right time to dust it off again. I mean these words today even more than I did three years ago💕

This is our very ordinary home. It was built in 1983, so it’s old but not old enough to be special. Just old enough to be totally out of style. We’ve been able to fix it up here and there and some things are looking pretty good, but there have been no truly major renovations. There are no big bathrooms. There is no bonus room. It is not white and shiny. But I love this home.

We live here and love here. We cook and eat a thousand meals together here and we invite people in with us. Kids are loud and there are plenty of spills that don’t matter. No one minds sitting on the couch or the floor to eat. No one minds using a non-remodeled bathroom.

It’s my hope that we’ve created a place of respite and peace here, for ourselves and for others. A place that says “you matter here”, “you belong here”, and “you can be your real self here”.

Over the next couple of months you’ll see plenty of images of beautiful holiday homes on the internet and on tv and that isn’t wrong or bad (I personally really enjoy those things). But don’t let yourself forget that true hospitality has nothing to do with how a place looks and everything to do with how it feels. People just want a place where they feel welcome. And nothing has to be bright and shiny to offer that 💕

The holiday season can be a wonderful time with family and friends.

It can also be a time when we feel tempted to compare our lives to others we know or see on online.

It might be helpful to remember:
-Your capacity will be different in different seasons. It’s ok if things are different than they were last year.

-You’re the expert on what kind of gift giving works best for your family. Gift giving is not a moral issue, but it is an entirely subjective one. You get to decide what’s right for you this year.

-Family issues can be difficult, especially during the holidays. You’re not alone in this.

-Most people have an area of life that hasn’t turned out like they hoped and the holidays tend to highlight these things. You’re not alone in this.

-Pictures tell a story, but never even come close to telling the whole story.

-You can’t control what people share online, but you CAN control what you take in.

Don’t compare your real, messy, beautiful life to the tiny piece of the lives you see on social media. Not this holiday season or ever ❤️

Will told Lily we could have dinner at any restaurant in Jackson once she met a special reading goal she set for herself. She met her goal last week and I think you know what this Mississippi girl chose. Those biscuits call to us all!

🇺🇸Talking to Your Kids About the Election🇺🇸

1. Don’t avoid it the topic. It’s always tempting to avoid discussions with our kids things that may feel difficult. But the vast majority of children will know there is an election and will have *heard* quite a bit about it. You want their primary information to come from you—a source of stability, safety, and love—and not what they *heard*.

2. Discuss the unique privilege and responsibilities that we have as voters! Discuss the significance of learning about candidates and share how our vote is a chance to make our voice heard.

3. Avoid doomsday messaging and discuss things that will not change in your family regardless of the election outcome.
Ex.—we will still go to work and school, we will still attend church and activities, you will still be loved.

4. Discuss how we can disagree with others in ways that remain respectful. People are always going to have differing opinions, but we are in control of how we respond. We do not have to let politicians and media shape how our children view appropriate behavior in times of disagreement.

5. Model appropriate behavior. Children need us to be mature and calm. How they see us speak, react, treat others, and manage stress will impact them more than any lessons we share.

*** If you are a person who prays, let your kids see and hear you pray. For candidates you support, for candidates you do not support, and whoever the next president will be regardless of whether you voted for them or not!

A few things I’ve been doing instead of creating

A few things I’ve been doing instead of creating any sort of social media “content”. Plus a lot of puppy petting and reading. I like this life ❤️

When your world feels like it’s falling apart. Because doesn’t this happen to all of us at some point? It might be one thing or it might be a combination of things, but it happens to all of us eventually.

An unexpected diagnosis, financial problems, a difficult loss, or a season of change. There are so many things that can knock us off our feet.

And when it happens, we want to DO something. We want to grab onto something and feel steady again.

There is no magic solution to such a difficult season, but here are a few things that may be helpful:

-Accept where you are. Give the season a name (this is Hard. this is Sad. this is Devastating). Naming things helps us gain authority over them and puts us in a better position to heal when the time comes. Denying what you’re going through (this is no big deal. I shouldn’t feel this way) can add a lot of difficult emotions to an experience that is already difficult.

-To gain a small sense of normalcy, pick one simple thing a day that you can do to feel normal. Read a book to your child, do a small load of laundry, wash your hair. Just one thing that makes you feel like yourself.

-Accept help. This isn’t the time to turn help down. When people say “how can I help” try to name something specific. Don’t go through this time alone.

-Know this season isn’t forever. A better day WILL come. You can accept where you are but still remind yourself of this.

-If you consider yourself a person of faith, hang on to what you know with all you’ve got. Everything is not good, everything is not from God, and everything does not happen “for a reason”. But He will absolutely take your darkest times and use them for your good. One day the sun will shine again, and when it does your faith will be stronger.

This list isn’t exhaustive and it doesn’t take the place of therapy, but I do hope it’s encouraging to you if you’re in a hard place💕
